SUAREZ HITS HAT-TRICK AS LIVERPOOL ROAR PAST CARDIFF... Liverpool 6 (Suarez 16, 60, 90+6, Skrtel 41, 54, Sturridge 75)...

Cardiff City           3 - 6        Liverpool
Suarez hits hat-trick as Liverpool roar past Cardiff - Football - Premier League Liverpool twice came from behind before roaring to a 6-3 win at Cardiff City to keep their Premier League title challenge on track.
A hat-trick from Luis Suarez and two from Martin Skrtel and another from Daniel Sturridge saw them slice through Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's relegation candidates.
Suarez completed his hat-trick with virtually the final kick of the game. Between them, Suarez and Sturridge's 47 Premier League goals were one more than Manchester United had mustered all season prior to their Saturday evening game at West Ham - a stat that quickly did the rounds on social media, and no doubt helped inspire the Red Devils' fast start at West Ham to go 2-0 up in half an hour.
First-half strikes from Jordon Mutch and Fraizer Campbell had given hope to the home fans, who waved blue scarves en masse to protest against the club's ownership.
But they could not stem the tide of pacy, technical Liverpool attacks, and once Suarez and Sturridge hit their stride victory was assured despite defensive frailties that allowed Mutch to score his second late on.
Brendan Rodgers' side remain four points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand. Manchester City are a further two points adrift with two in hand on Liverpool and three on Chelsea.

KEY MOMENTS
9’ – GOAL: CARDIFF 1-0 LIVERPOOL - Loose ball from Allen is picked up by Mutch who drives into the penalty area and hits a low hard shot into the bottom corner.
16’ – GOAL: CARDIFF 1-1 LIVERPOOL – Henderson slides in Johnson inside the defender. He gets to the byline and cuts back to Suarez who can’t miss from six yards out.
25’ – GOAL: CARDIFF 2-1 LIVERPOOL – Campbell picks it up and drives inside Agger into the penalty area before calming himself and placing it into the back of the net.
41’ – GOAL: CARDIFF 2-2 LIVERPOOL – Skrtel with a near-post dart to get his toe in ahead of Cala and poke the ball home from a whipped Coutinho cross.
54’ – GOAL: CARDIFF 2-3 LIVERPOOL – The Slovakian drifts to the near post where he meets the delivery with a glancing header into the opposite corner.
60’ – GOAL: CARDIFF 2-4 LIVERPOOL – Sturridge makes the best of a poor touch by the defender and back-heels to Suarez who advances and smashes the ball home.
75’ – GOAL: CARDIFF 2-5 LIVERPOOL – The England striker gets in on the act as he bursts into the box where Suarez has just fed the ball and finishes from close range.
88’ – GOAL: CARDIFF 3-5 LIVERPOOL – Kenwyne Jones gets up at the far post and nods it back to Mutch who in turn heads into the corner to give Cardiff a glimmer of hope.
90+6 – GOAL: CARDIFF 3-6 LIVERPOOL – Suarez completes his hat-trick as he outmuscles Juan Cala and bears down on goal before slotting past the onrushing goalkeeper.

KEY STATS
Luis Suarez is the first Liverpool striker since Robbie Fowler to score over 25 Premier League goals in a season. He is now on 28 with eight games left to play.
The Uruguayan has scored his third Premier League hat-trick of the season and his fourth away from home since joining the Premier League. Only Michael Owen has more (five.)
Jordan Mutch has scored twice in a match for the first time in his career. His two goals today take his tally to six which is his highest ever scoring campaign.
This is the first time since 1962 that Cardiff have conceded five goals in a top-flight match. This is also the first time Cardiff have lost at home to Liverpool since 1958.
TALKING POINT
They may be frail at the back but can anyone stop Liverpool scoring their way to the title? Suarez and Sturridge look unplayable at the moment and the goals just keep coming for the pair. They’ve now got 48 between them this season and it shows no sign of letting up as we come in to the business end of the season.

Chelsea crush Arsenal on Wenger’s special day...

Chelsea    6 - 0    Arsenal
Chelsea crush Arsenal on Wenger’s special day - Football - Premier League

Chelsea humiliated Arsenal with a 6-0 victory on Arsene Wenger’s 1,000th game in charge for Arsenal.
Chelsea scored first on five minutes when Samuel Eto’o curled a left-footed shot past Wojciech Szczesny from the edge of the box, just after Olivier Giroud wasted a great chance. Three minutes later, Andre Schurrle made it two from the same spot after receiving a pass from Nemanja Matic.
On 15 minutes, Eden Hazard’s shot, already going wide, was handled by the diving Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Andre Marriner then mistakenly sent Kieran Gibbs off as the match descended into farce. Hazard converted the penalty, stroking it down the middle of the goal.
On 42 minutes, Chelsea scored their fourth when Fernando Torres crossed from the right for Oscar to blast into the net.
The second half was far less frantic, with Santi Cazorla dragging his shot wide, and Oscar having a shot tipped over. Then, on 66 minutes, Oscar made it five when his low shot from the edge of the box was missed by Wojciech Szczesny’s dive.
Mohamed Salah then scored his first Chelsea goal, running onto a Matic long ball to finish low past Szczesny. It remains Chelsea’s title to lose.

42’ - OSCAR GOAL - Set free down the right, Torres takes his time to send the ball across for Oscar to finish with power from close-range.
47’ - LUIZ AND TORRES CHANCE - Torres does well to evade Vermaelen on the edge of the box, and stands up to Rosicky’s challenge, but his shot is blocked, and Luiz’s effort from the rebound is put behind.
60’ - CAZORLA SHOT - Cazorla drags his shot inches wide, but Cech probably had it covered.
66’ - FIVE-NIL - Oscar collects a loose ball from Rosicky to Arteta, and curls in a shot that Szczesny could, but doesn’t, palm away.
71’ - SALAH MAKES IT SIX - Jogging onto a ball over the top, in miles of space, Salah curls his shot under the ‘keeper.

BARCA: TATA GOING NOWHERE, MESSI TALKS ONGOING...

Barcelona have rejected suggestions Tata Martino has said he will leave the club at the end of the season and confirmed the club’s intention to renew the contract of Lionel Messi.

Reports from Spain claimed Martino had informed sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and president Josep Maria Bartomeu that he wanted to break his two-year contract after only a year at Camp Nou.
But speaking at a press conference regarding the redevelopment of Camp Nou, a Barca spokesman insisted Martino had revealed no such decision.
“We categorically deny that Tata or his coaching staff have announced an intention to leave the club,” Manel Arroyo, the vice president of communications, said.
“We’ve talked to him and he’s focused on the objectives of the team and the planning for the challenges of next season.
“There is a clause in Martino’s contract that allows either side to break the contract,” Arroyo confirmed.
Arroyo also said that Messi, who became the club’s all-time leading scorer with a hat-trick against Osasuna on Sunday, continues to talk with La Blaugrana about renewing his terms.
“Leo has said in his own words that he wants to retire at Barca,” Arroyo said.
“As we have every other time, we’ll make every effort to help Leo complete his career at Barca.
“In fact, at the [board meeting] we welcomed the new record set as top scorer and reinforced our commitment to ensure Leo’s continuity.
“If at 26 he has surpassed Paulino Alcantara, we cannot imagine where it will end.”
The cost to Barcelona of renewing Lionel Messi’s contract has been put at €250m by reports from Spain.
AS claims that Messi’s camp is pushing for a salary of €25m on a five-year deal to make Messi the highest-paid player in the world.
Barca and Messi are currently discussing a seventh contract renewal in nine years and are said by AS to be far apart on the numbers.
AS also suggests Messi was made offers last summer by other clubs, while the arrival of Neymar and his complicated contractual arrangement is what has spurred the Messi camp to push for a sharp increase in salary.
Arroyo declined to comment on when the deal would be signed.
“I refer you to the statement of president Bartomeu,” Arroyo replied.
“When he took over the job of speaking with Messi and [his father and agent] Jorge Messi, he wanted to talk unhurried and with discretion. And that’s what he’s doing.
“It doesn’t do anyone any favours to talk about it now.”

Bayern end Arsenal European hopes after draw in Munich...

Bayern Munich       1 - 1            Arsenal

Bayern end Arsenal European hopes after draw in Munich - Football - Champions LeagueAFP Bayern Munich and Arsenal drew 1-1 in their Champions League last 16 second leg at the Allianz Arena, but the German side progressed to the quarter-finals 3-1 on aggregate.
Pep Guardiola's Champions League holders were in control of the tie after a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium three weeks ago, and more or less put matters to bed when Bastian Schweinsteiger accepted a pass from Franck Ribery to lift the ball over Lukasz Fabianski in the visiting goal from eight yards out on 54 minutes.
Arsenal rescued a draw on the night three minutes later when Lukas Podolski latched onto a ball from Olivier Giroud before smashing a powerful drive past Manuel Neuer, who was beaten at his near post by the energy of the shot. Podolski appeared to push Philipp Lahm in the back to earn possession, but the goal was allowed to stand much to the annoyance of the home side.
Arjen Robben's diving was an unsporting feature of the match, and he earned a soft penalty when he dived after being barely nudged on the heels by Laurent Koscielny a minute into four added on.
It was perhaps justice that Fabianski saved home substitute Thomas Mueller's penalty with his feet after diving to his right. Arsenal escaped with a draw, but the damage was more or less done three weeks ago when the German side enjoyed a 2-0 win in London.

Costa at the double as Atletico thrash Milan...

Athletico Madrid     4-1       AC Milan

Diego Costa continued his Champions League hot streak with a brace as Atletico Madrid booked their place in the last eight for the first time in 17 years with a thumping 4-1 home win over AC Milan.
The Spain international took his tally to seven goals in five outings in the competition with the strikes that started and finished the scoring on a night when Diego Simeone's side romped to a 5-1 success on aggregate.
The hosts deserved their emphatic victory for another thrilling display at the Vicente Calderon but it wasn't without some scares after Costa had got them off to a flyer with a volley on the stretch.
Milan recovered well from the early setback and pulled level on the night when Kaka arrived at the far post to guide home Andrea Poli's exquisite right-wing cross just shy of the half hour.
The Brazilian international has recaptured some of his old magic since returning to the Rossoneri, but he was left ruing a wasteful finish soon after when he thumped a free header over the top.
It would prove a costly miss as Atletico restored their advantage on 40 minutes when Arda Turan's speculative volley took a wicked deflection off Adil Rami and looped into the opposite corner.
The hosts should have made it three on the counter just after the break when Gabi struck the woodwork before they finally made sure of victory when the impressive Raul Garcia rose highest to thump home a header 20 minutes from time.
And Costa rubbed salt in Milan's wounds late on when he took Jose Sosa's pass in his stride and rifled a low shot into the far corner.
    KEY MOMENTS
PRE-MATCH: Costa and Balotelli return - Diego Costa is one of a key trio for Atletico who return after serving suspension at the weekend. Milan's talisman is also involved from the start after shrugging off the shoulder injury sustained in the first leg to play in the Rossoneri's weekend defeat at Udinese.
3' - GOAL: Atletico 1-0 Milan. A dream start for Atletico and it's that man Costa once again. A ball in from the right is met by the new Spain international with a volley on the stretch that he guides into the corner.
27' - GOAL: Atletico 1-1 Milan. A superb move ends with Kaka meeting Poli's right-wing cross with a firm far-post header. Milan are back in it. (Atletico lead 2-1 on aggregate).
36' MILAN CHANCE - Kaka rises to meet another pinpoint cross from the right from Adel Taarabt but this time he powers his header over the top. It should be 2-1.
40' GOAL: Atletico 2-1 Milan. Atleti regain the lead with a huge slice of luck as Arda Turan's volley from the edge of the box takes a big deflection and flies into the other corner.
42' ATLETICO CHANCE - SO CLOSE! Raul Garcia almost makes it three with a sensational scissor kick that arrows inches past the upright. It deserved a goal. Wonderful technique.
49' OFF THE POST - A lightning break from a Milan corner sees Costa charge at the Rossoneri's rearguard and tee up Gabi who sees his shot crash off the near post.
71' GOAL - Atletico 3-1 Milan. Raul Garcia rises highest to power a header beyond Abbiati from a right-wing free kick. It's 4-1 on aggregate and surely all over now.
72' OFF THE BAR - Robinho almost responds immediately with a shot on the run that clips the bar and bounces clear of danger for the Spanish side.
85' GOAL! Atletico 4-1 Milan. Costa rubs salt in those Milan wounds by picking up a pass from Sosa and drilling a low shot into the far corner. (5-1 on agg).

WILSHERE INJURY IS BLOW FOR ARSENAL – BUT BREAK COULD FAVOUR ENGLAND…

    Poor Jack Wilshere.
He must think he has run over every black cat in London. A player of wretched ill luck, he has now had another blow to his development. After Daniel Agger’s close attentions on Wednesday night, he will now be out of action for six weeks. He is facing a race to be fit for the World Cup.
And so begins another of England’s traditional World Cup warm up yarns. It must happen in other countries too, but here we seem to specialise in the injury drama. Ahead of every tournament one of our principal hopes gets crocked and we spend the next few months fretting whether he will be ready when the competition kicks off.
The almost unbroken line of ignominy stretches back to 1982 when Ron Greenwood took a barely fit Trevor Brooking and Kevin Keegan to Spain. In the end, the twosome played for about 20 minutes in England’s last game, leaving us with little more than a frustrating sense of what might have been.
Then in both 1986 and 1990, there was Bryan Robson. If there was one thing that you could rely on with Captain Marvel, it was that he would be crocked at a critical time. And, though he manfully battled his way back to prominence, in neither tournament was he at his swashbuckling finest.
In 2002 we had the most dramatic of all, when David Beckham snapped his metatarsal and we were all invited to put our hands on a picture of the damaged bone on the front page of The Sun, in the hope that a collective act of healing could be induced. To a degree it worked: he scored a penalty against Argentina.
In 2006, it was the curse of the metatarsal again, striking down Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen. Poor Owen went on to suffer far worse at the tournament itself when he snapped his cruciate ligament, an injury that curtailed his glittering career and an injury that he now believes was caused by rushing back to fitness for the World Cup.
Then in 2010, it was Rooney again. Though that time it seemed to be an excess of ginger facial hair that was the issue.
    Now there is Wilshere.
Six weeks is the suggested recovery time from the hairline fracture he sustained in Agger’s challenge. Which gives him no more than a couple of Arsenal games to get himself up to match fitness before the World Cup preparations begin in earnest, marginally more than Owen, for instance, had before the 2006 competition. The only competitive action he enjoyed before heading to Japan was as a second half substitute in Newcastle’s final game of the season.
For Arsene Wenger, in the meantime, the issue is of slightly more immediate concern. As it happens, he was in philosophical mood at his weekly press conference, absolving both Agger and England’s management of blame. Inside, though, he will have been fuming about it, frustrated at a blow well beyond his control.
For sure Arsenal will be insured against such risk. So will the FA. A huge premium will have been paid and the insurance company will now be forking out Wilshire’s wages for the duration of his lay off.
But this is not a financial issue. It is bad enough for the Arsenal boss that he has seen Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey laid up for lengthy periods of time after being injured while playing in club colours. On Wednesday he had to watch one of his most important assets being sabotaged while on duty for someone else. That must really hurt.
Because while the rest of the country hope that he is fit in time for the World Cup, Wenger knows that he won’t be able to pick Wilshere for the next dozen Arsenal games. At such a critical juncture in the season, when he needs his brightest and best fit and firing if he is to have any chance of breaking his trophy duck, this was the lowest of blows. From his point of view, this was yet further evidence that the world is conspiring against him.
Mind, from the England fan’s perspective, whisper it, but this might not be the worst thing in the world. Given that Wilshere managed to limp on for more than half an hour after he had been crocked by the Dane, it does not suggest it was the most long-term of problems.
And a few weeks out now may well mean the player does not turn up in Brazil exhausted.
Provided he has a couple of Arsenal games at the tail end of the season in which to hone his match fitness, he could be heading to the World Cup refreshed, alert and hugely motivated.
Unlike what has happened in the past when more substantial issues have affected our best hopes, this could be a blessing in disguise. Though we can safely say Arsene Wenger won’t be seeing it that way.
